The music on these three discs is an abridged survey of some of the artists active today who we think are among the best at what they do. The oldest track here is from 2003 -- with most being released this year -- and many of the performers featured are themselves under 30. It's quite possible that they'll be among the artists enthusiastically shared between fans 35 years hence.
With the exception of one rather successful artist and two or three others who have managed some exposure and slight recognition, the vast majority of these artists are almost completely unknown outside of the contemporary underground, and many of the albums from which these songs came were released by the bands themselves on very small CDR runs.
We've deliberately left off most of the bigger names -- the Banharts, the Newsoms, the Valentines, Chasnys, and Wooden Wands... we even left off Espers. Since you likely know much of that anyway, we really wanted to shine a light on some of the lesser-knowns.
It's folk, to be sure, but each artist's style differs from the next to a greater or lesser degree: English traditional, sea shanties, psychedelic rock, noise, bluegrass -- they all inform this work. If you have a favorite (or favorites), please leave a request in the comments if you're interested in the specific release info. We'd be happy to oblige.

I'm not familiar with a lot of this,, but the things I am in the know about on here are fantastic. Looks like I'll be purchasing an extension on my rapidshare account (I CANNOT miss out on the stuff you guys are posting...keep up the great work!)
A GREAT COMPILATION AS USUAL. AND THE THE BLOG IS WONDERFULCOCKSUCKER
Thanks, folks. Anonymous -- do you happen to have Tourette's Syndrome? I must admit, I'm somewhat confused by the last word of your post...
Thank you, thank you, thank you...keep up the good work, I certainly appreciate your broading my musical horizons.
looks like a nice comp.
surprised that there isnt any of the jewelled antler stuff on there or the new wave of finnish psych folk music. ive been diggin those 2 worlds alot lately.
What, Mi and L'au don't count? ;)
Yeah, me too, Greg... but those two scenes warrant comps of their own! And those WILL be coming, I assure you.
(It was a deliberate decision to leave that stuff off for that very reason; probably should've mentioned that in the post...)
There are a number of ready-made comps from JA, 267 Lattajjaa, Fonal, etc. -- Ihmettelenpä Sanoi Kampela Jos Lahana On Pliisu, 267 Purkkia Liimaa, Summer and Smiles of Finland, Kuolleena Haudattuja, Maan Matoset... jeez, there are a lot of 'em.
If those prove no longer available, there's a good chance we'll get to some of those, but I think we'll be prioritizing our very own GSU mixes of those two scenes!
guauuu this blog is awesome congratulations for this marvelous music
ok these are not the proper freak folk/psych words to describe your excellent taste in this music, but your blog is the fuckin' bomb diggity.
Thank you!
you post the most amazing stuff... I appreciate the writing about it too... lots of artists here who I'm not familiar with... the Mariee Sioux track in particular has blown me away. Interesting influences she lists on her myspace site.

Just discovered your wonderful blog. Any chance of reloading those "Third Ear Band" LPS?
Sounded mighty interesting.

Wow, fantastic stuff, already known only some of them (Yorkston, Nadler...). Also beautiul, evocative artwork. The best blog around. Thanks for your hard work.
i'm through the first disc so far...good stuff! there's a lot here i'm going to check out.
I agree with Johnny: so ephemeral being to realice, indeed.
WOW!! Who is the Mariee Sioux (what a beautiful name) girl? Have you listened to her other stuff? She's truly unique and worth listening to.
Can you upload this compilation again? People in the "experimental etc. download" community, in orkut, are interested in it.
